About the WWF Global Challenge

Learning to Protect Our Blue Planet

The WWF Global Challenge brings together ocean science, conservation and friendly global competition. Students build a real understanding of how the ocean works and what threatens it. They also find out what people are doing to protect it.

From Ocean Explorer to Marine Master

Students work through six themes in around 90 minutes of interactive stories, films and quizzes. Each pair of themes earns a badge, and the Challenge quizzes earn the fourth.

1
Badge 1
Ocean explorer

Marine Diversity and Distribution. Why ocean life differs around the world, from biodiversity hotspots and mangroves to orcas and river dolphins.

World Beneath the Waves. How ocean ecosystems work, from kelp forests and food webs to phytoplankton and ocean circulation.

2
Badge 2
Marine Biologist

Life Underwater. How marine animals breathe, dive, move, feed and sense their surroundings.

Adaptations and Behaviour. Bioluminescence, camouflage, migration, communication and the social lives of dolphins.

3
Badge 3
Ocean Protector

Challenges to Ocean Health. Climate change, overfishing, pollution, dead zones and invasive species.

Conservation and Action. Marine protected areas, conservation technology, sustainable fisheries and what students can do.

Badge 4
Marine Master

The Challenge quizzes test what students have learned across all six themes.

By completing the Challenge, students will be able to:
● Explain how ocean ecosystems function and why they matter to life on Earth.
● Describe marine biodiversity and the adaptations that help species survive.
● Explain how marine animals interact with each other and their environment.
● Identify the major threats facing ocean wildlife and ecosystems.
● Investigate real-world approaches to marine conservation.
● Recognise how individuals, communities and organisations can take action to protect the ocean.

Learning That Leads to Action

The Challenge isn't just about knowing the answers. Students move from curiosity to understanding, and from understanding to action.
