WWF GLOBAL CHALLENGE: TEACHER TOOLKIT

orca-wwgc.webp

Inspire your students to explore the natural world — and take part in a global school competition.

The WWF Global Challenge invites young people to explore wild adaptations, endangered species, and global conservation issues — one continent at a time. These optional classroom activities help students connect with the content and immerse themselves in the competition.

HOW TO GET STARTED

  1. Students login & enter a unique school code in their dashboard on itza.io

  2. Students adventure through each continent, unlocking content and earning Yakka points as they go.

The WWF Global Challenge is perfect for classroom time, clubs, or independent exploration.

ACTIVITY 1: EXPLORE & DISCOVER
5 FASCINATING FACTS

Introduce students to the WWF Global Challenge and encourage them to learn independently at their own pace.

Time: 10 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Ask students to explore a region or animal story on itza.io and find 5 interesting facts they didn’t know before.

  2. Set a timer for 10 minutes.

  3. Invite a few students to share their favourite discoveries.

Benefits:

  • Gets students excited to delve into different aspects of the content.

  • Builds digital research and note-taking skills.

  • Encourages students to evaluate and discuss what they find most intriguing.

ACTIVITY 2: SURVIVAL VS REPRODUCTION
POTENTIALLY DEADLY – TREE-RUNNING MANTIS

Examine evolutionary trade-offs in nature.

Time: 15–30 minutes

Guiding Questions:

  • Why might the male mantis being eaten during mating actually benefit reproduction?

  • How do male mantises use sight, smell, and behaviour to stay safe during courtship?

  • What does this tell us about how evolution balances survival and reproduction?

Benefits:

  • Promotes critical and scientific thinking.

  • Connects biology concepts to real species behaviour.

ACTIVITY 3: CONSERVATION DEBATE
AGAINST THE ODDS

Encourage students to research, evaluate, and discuss real conservation issues.

Time: 30–90 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Divide students into small groups.

  2. Assign each group a WWF species/campaign (e.g. Tigers in India, Penguins in Antarctica).

  3. Groups research their assigned species or region and prepare a short presentation or argument on its importance, main conservation challenges, and possible solutions.

  4. Optional: Hold a class debate or mock conference.

Extension Ideas:

  • Encourage visual or multimedia components.

  • Assign roles: conservationist, government, local community etc.

  • Encourage rebuttals and critical questions.

Benefits:

  • Builds research, empathy and presentation skills.

  • Deepens understanding of global environmental issues.

  • Fosters collaborative problem-solving and respectful discussion.

ACTIVITY 4: REPTILE SUPERPOWER DEBATE
ORIGINS & SUPERPOWERS

Spark fun competition in this interactive pairs activity exploring animal adaptations.

Time: 15 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Students pair up and pick two reptiles from the challenge (e.g. Tuatara vs Crocodile).

  2. Each student researches one unique “superpower”.

  3. Debate: Who would survive longer? Who has the most useful adaptation?

Extension:

  • Share the most compelling arguments with the whole class.

  • How might these superpowers be useful in different scenarios?

  • Create a “Wall of Superpowers” display.

Benefits:

  • Makes biology engaging and personal.

  • Sharpens critical and persuasive thinking.

  • Encourages curiosity about evolution and ecology.
